Jennifer Koh, violin and Thomas Sauer, piano [CONCERT] Online

Jennifer Koh, violin and Thomas Sauer, piano

Fearless and virtuosic, recognized for intense, commanding performances, Jennifer Koh is “a prodigious builder of bridges,” (LA Times). She is a charismatic leader in the world of new music, engaged in a mission to create projects presenting many compositional voices. “There is space in this world for all of us and for all of our stories,” Koh writes. Her recent projects traverse a borderless musical frontier: Bach and Tchaikovsky duos to pieces by an eclectic group of composer-performers influenced by Tuvan throat singing, Buddhist chant, and the poetry of Stephen Crane. To open her residency she performs two commissions from the Library’s McKim Fund, Julia Wolfe’s Mink Stole and George Lewis’s The Mangle of Practice, alongside new pieces from her acclaimed virtual series Alone Together: 42 short solo violin works commissioned to support composers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Live music is a communal experience for all of us (musicians and audience), a space where we create ‘togetherness’ inside a physical space. Sound disappears within milliseconds of its creation — but it is the connectivity within and between these sounds that creates music. This connectivity also creates relationships between all of us in the room, bringing us together in imagined spaces where the music resides in each of us.” ~ Jennifer Koh
